Stepping up to volunteer and finding a new path Volunteering can be a positive way to give back to the community - and to gain something personally in return. Graham McKnight, Guild Care’s Volunteer Coordinator, recently caught up with Wayne, one of our valued Creating Connections volunteers, to find out what the experience has meant to him and how it’s opened new doors to return to work. With a wide range of weekly activities for people in Worthing aged 65 and over, Creating Connections aims to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, which can have a significant impact on people’s health and wellbeing. Volunteers like Wayne help to run the sessions which range from singing for fun and quizzes, to tai chi and gardening. Graham: Why did you become a Creating Connections Volunteer with Guild Care?Wayne: The main reason I wanted to volunteer was to give back to the community by helping others. I also wanted to get back to working with the elderly and boost my confidence. Graham: What did you enjoy the most about volunteering at the Thursday social fun club?Wayne: I just love the people that come along to the groups. I see so much life in them, and it’s very inspiring. The great team I work with - Karen, Nikki, Jodie, Shirley, and Charlotte - are so lovely and welcoming. Graham: How has volunteering with Guild Care helped you?Wayne: It’s inspired me to work again and boosted my confidence, knowing I've made Guild Care Members’ days with my enthusiasm. Graham: Do you have any advice for future Guild Care volunteers?Wayne: Just go out there and do it, especially if you’re not working. It will boost your confidence and inspire you when you see how much fun Guild Care Members have - and you will have fun too!
