‘Sow and Grow’ allotment group welcomes new members Guild Care is inviting people aged over 65 to get involved in this summer’s ‘Sow and Grow’. This free, weekly activity is an opportunity to nurture plants, fruit and vegetables through the main growing season along with the chance to make new local friends with a shared interest. As part of the local charity’s Creating Connections programme, Sow and Grow sessions will run from 10am to 12 noon every Monday apart from bank holidays. The summer sessions offer a practical and sociable way to spend time outdoors in nature. Set within an accessible allotment, Sow and Grow brings people together to plant, grow, and care for a range of fruit, vegetables, plants, and flowers. Group members and volunteers will have the chance to participate in all aspects from planting seeds to caring for crops and, hopefully, enjoying the harvest later in the summer. There is no pressure to chat, although that’s welcome, and no expectation of experience, only a shared willingness to get involved and enjoy both the process and the harvest. Megan Cohen from Guild Care’s Creating Connections programme, said, “Sow and Grow offers people who may be feeling lonely or isolated the chance to spend time outdoors, share their gardening experience and maybe learn something new. It’s also a lovely way connect with others in a relaxed and welcoming way with a shared purpose. These sessions are about building confidence as much as growing produce and we’d love to welcome more members to join our group over the coming months.” Practical considerations have been carefully addressed. The allotment is designed to be accessible, making it easier for people to take part comfortably. Transport is also available on request, helping remove barriers and ensuring more people can attend. Guild Care’s Sow and Grow is an opportunity to enjoy gardening with others and is open to anyone over 65 looking to stay active, meet new people, and spend time out in the fresh air. Creating Connections offers a varied programme of activities for older adults throughout the week including tai chi, arts and crafts, table tennis, and relaxed social gatherings including the popular ‘singing for fun’ sessions.
