The Little Sherwood Farm Experience brought a ray of sunshine to the residents at Guild Care’s Caer Gwent care home in Worthing on Thursday, 21st November. From cuddling rabbits to stroking pygmy goats, to meeting Spirit, the super-friendly dog, and spending time with a gentle donkey, Zebedee, it was an afternoon filled with smiles.

“Animal visits like these mean so much to everyone here,” said Sammy, health and wellbeing coordinator at Caer Gwent. “The adorable animals bring happiness, comfort and the chance to create some beautiful memories. The donkey even enjoyed grazing on some tasty grass!”

Residents wrapped up warmly to venture into Caer Gwent’s gardens where the animals were relaxed, welcome guests who enjoyed all the attention. Those residents who preferred to stay indoors in the warm, could watch the animals and greet some of the smaller ones who were brought inside for extra cuddles.

A 2022 report in Psychology Today highlighted the many benefits of animal therapy and how it can improve the physical and mental wellbeing of older people by increasing positive emotions and reducing worries.

Sammy added, “The joy of being around animals is well known, so it was wonderful to welcome some of our four-legged friends to Caer Gwent for a few hours. We’re already looking forward to their next visit in the spring!”

Caer Gwent care home is passionate about providing bespoke elderly care with fully inclusive 24-hour nursing to help residents to lead fulfilling, safe and secure lives. With a higher than average number of staff, more time is available for individual care.
